“This tribe called ‘Women of Color’ is not an ethnicity. It is one of the inventions of solidarity, an alliance, a political necessity that is not the given name of every female with dark skin and a colonized tongue, but rather a choice about how to resist and with whom.” Aurora Levins (via counterstorytelling)

I wonder if this data represents just one country or is it worldwide?

I imagine that it is worldwide, but it could also be the US.   I could be wrong.  The blogger who made this lovely set of graphs does not say.  I recommend you click on the link and check out the page, there are a few more on there as well as some funny graphics.

FUCK YEAH!

my recurring dreams

normally i don’t dream/don’t remember my dreams when i wake up; however, sometimes i do dream & supposedly this is what my dreams mean:

Falling. We often have a sense that we are falling in our dream – then we suddenly wake up and find we’re safe in our bed. This is said to be the fear that we are losing control, or it may be a fear of abandonment.

Having your teeth fall out. Like falling, this dream symbolizes powerlessness, and loss of control in some area of life. It can also mean you suffer from low self-esteem and are afraid to be honest and to speak your mind.

what i take this to mean:  FUCK PATRIARCHY & the systemic institutions that police, coerce & marginalize folks so that even in our dreams there is no peace.

Drunk creepers beware

So I went to GLAM last night with a bunch of friends. Aside from the usual dudes trying to dance up on people that really aren’t interested, I had this strange, but oddly inspirational moment.

So a female friend of mine decided to lean against a retaining wall while others were getting their post-dance snack on and I watched this guy walk up and sit fairly close to my friend. I moved closer in case I needed to intervene on behalf of my drunk friend. As far as I knew, things were fine. Then out of nowhere, he says, “Oh, is that your friend? She knows what’s up. She looks legit mean.” I had no response and kept looking the other way so as not to engage. Then, he said, “I don’t mean to be offensive…shit…” and walked away (perhaps in awkwardness, but maybe in fear of my 5’3” statured wrath. I may be biased, but pretty sure it was the latter.

Needless to say, I don’t tolerate assholes well and I like to keep my friends safe. There were a couple of moments where we all had to dodge some shady guys who kept trying to touch us inappropriately. I may or may not have sent one of them home with a bruised chest from my elbow nudging. In my defense, he was an asshole and he deserved it from what I saw him and his asshole friends doing last night.

In the words of a great friend of mine: just because you’re here and I’m here does not mean that you can treat me like piece of meat and if you do my friends may be short, but they’re fiesty. - c.l.

“Younger women were more likely to develop symptoms of PTSD, and data suggest Asian and black women are at a more than 50 percent higher risk than white women.

If we can identify potential risk factors for PTSD, when women are diagnosed with breast cancer, we could provide early prevention and intervention to minimize PTSD symptoms. This approach might also have an indirect impact on the observed racial disparity in breast cancer survival.”

* Why is it that we’re not researching violence committed against women, especially women of color, in conjunction to this?

It may just be my opinion, but could the stressors that women face daily in this patriarchal society be a huge factor in their diagnosis of PTSD and further diagnosis of cancer be related?
